Teeth Whitening: Professional Treatment vs. DIY

Teeth Whitening: Professional vs. DIY
When it comes to teeth whitening, there are several options available. A person can choose to have their teeth professionally whitened by a cosmetic dentist via in-office procedures, or they can use at-home whitening kits; whether obtained through their dentist or purchased over the counter. Let’s take a look at all three options.

Professional Teeth Whitening by a Cosmetic Dentist

This first method has the highest price tag, but it is also the one with the quickest and best results. While other teeth whitening methods require weeks of prolonged use, professional teeth whitening by a cosmetic dentist can be done in as little as 60 minutes, broken into 15-20 minute intervals. People with particularly stubborn stains may be asked to return for additional treatments, or may be given a whitening kit to take home.

At- Home Teeth Whitening Kits Provided by a Cosmetic Dentist

There are basically two kinds of at-home whitening kits: those that a patient obtained from their dentist, and those that they purchased over the counter as a do-it-yourself option. The difference between the two is simple. A teeth whitening kit obtained from a cosmetic dentist will have stronger whitening agents than can be purchased over the counter and the trays will also be specifically fitted to the patient’s mouth, resulting in a much brighter smile.

Over the Counter DIY Teeth Whitening Methods

Over the counter teeth whitening methods can come in the form of strips, gels, mouthwashes and more. While these methods may not be as fast-acting as professional teeth whitening and the solutions don’t come in the same strength, they are not without their value. Over the counter whitening kits are a great way to maintain a brighter smile in between dental appointments.
